He started as a special effects artist in 1962 and left to pursue a directing career for music videos and commercials before transitioning into filmmaking in 1992. His filmmaking career started rocky with "Alien 3" (1992) as a critical failure, but quickly bounced back with the box office smash "Se7en" (1995), its success followed his next ambitious projects, including "Fight Club" (1999), "Panic Room" (2002), "Zodiac" (2007), and "The Social Network" (2010), which won him awards and multiple nominations throughout the years.
My Top 3 Favorite David Fincher Films
GONE GIRL (2014)
Based on Gillian Flynn's novel of the same name, the story starts when Amy Dunne goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary, and Nick becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance. Under media and police pressure, his portrayal of their happy union begins to crumble, leading to dark questions about their relationship. This became my immediate favorite as the first I had seen from Fincher, and its intriguing and thrilling nature kept me on my seat and guessing until the end.
SE7EN (1995)
Soon-to-retire Detective Lieutenant William Somerset and idealistic Detective David Mills investigate consecutive murders seemingly inspired by the seven deadly sins. A suspenseful manhunt ensues when they figure the crimes were planned far in advance. As both a horror and psychological thriller enjoyer, Fincher used elements of both excellently, as there was the constant fear of the unknown and the anticipation of what was coming. It ended with a shocking twist that made me want to see an alternate ending to compensate for its ruthless end.
THE GAME (1997)
After Nicholas Van Orton, a wealthy but lonely banker, is gifted by his brother a ticket to Consumer Recreation Services (CRS) that designs real-life games tailored for each specific participant, his reality is turned upside down as he questions if the game might be a conspiracy to steal his fortune and destroy him. It was a brain teaser that kept me guessing the truth behind everything. Although the ending could have shown more, especially after everything that has happened, lacking complete closure. Still, it is easily one of the most brilliant movies out there.
